    The Collect of the Day

    Saint Barnabas

    June 11

Grant, O God, that we may follow the example of your faithful servant Barnabas, who, seeking not his own renown but the well-being of your Church, gave generously of his life and substance for the relief of the poor and the spread of the Gospel; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    Domine, quis habitabit?BCP p. 599

1Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? *who may abide upon your holy hill?

2Whoever leads a blameless life and does what is right, *who speaks the truth from his heart.

3There is no guile upon his tongue; he does no evil to his friend; *he does not heap contempt upon his neighbor.

4In his sight the wicked is rejected, *but he honors those who fear the Lord.

5He has sworn to do no wrong *and does not take back his word.

6He does not give his money in hope of gain, *nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.

7Whoever does these things *shall never be overthrown.

    Deus misereaturBCP p. 675

1May God be merciful to us and bless us, *show us the light of his countenance and come to us.

2Let your ways be known upon earth, *your saving health among all nations.

3Let the peoples praise you, O God; *let all the peoples praise you.

4Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, *for you judge the peoples with equity and guide all the nations upon earth.

5Let the peoples praise you, O God; *let all the peoples praise you.

6The earth has brought forth her increase; *may God, our own God, give us his blessing.

7May God give us his blessing, *and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him.

    Acts 4:32-37

32 Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. 33 With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. 35 They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”). 37 He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

    Ecclus. 31:3-11

3 The rich person toils to amass a fortune,    and when he rests he fills himself with his dainties. 4 The poor person toils to make a meagre living, and if ever he rests he becomes needy. 5 One who loves gold will not be justified;    one who pursues money will be led astray by it. 6 Many have come to ruin because of gold,    and their destruction has met them face to face. 7 It is a stumbling-block to those who are avid for it,    and every fool will be taken captive by it. 8 Blessed is the rich person who is found blameless,    and who does not go after gold. 9 Who is he, that we may praise him?    For he has done wonders among his people. 10 Who has been tested by it and been found perfect?    Let it be for him a ground for boasting. Who has had the power to transgress and did not transgress,    and to do evil and did not do it? 11 His prosperity will be established, and the assembly will proclaim his acts of charity.
