Feast of St. John

    The Collect of the Day

    Saint John

    December 27

Shed upon your Church, O Lord, the brightness of your light, that we, being illumined by the teaching of your apostle and evangelist John, may so walk in the light of your truth, that at length we may attain to the fullness of eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    Dominus regnavitBCP p. 726

1The Lord is King; let the earth rejoice; *let the multitude of the isles be glad.

2Clouds and darkness are round about him, *righteousness and justice are the foundations of his throne.

3A fire goes before him *and burns up his enemies on every side.

4His lightnings light up the world; *the earth sees it and is afraid.

5The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord, *at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6The heavens declare his righteousness, *and all the peoples see his glory.

7Confounded be all who worship carved images and delight in false gods! *Bow down before him, all you gods.

8Zion hears and is glad, and the cities of Judah rejoice, *because of your judgments, O Lord.

9For you are the Lord, most high over all the earth; *you are exalted far above all gods.

10The Lord loves those who hate evil; *he preserves the lives of his saints and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

11Light has sprung up for the righteous, *and joyful gladness for those who are truehearted.

12Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, *and give thanks to his holy Name.

    Cantate DominoBCP p. 727

1Sing to the Lord a new song, *for he has done marvelous things.

2With his right hand and his holy arm *has he won for himself the victory.

3The Lord has made known his victory; *his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations.

4He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, *and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

5Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; *lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing.

6Sing to the Lord with the harp, *with the harp and the voice of song.

7With trumpets and the sound of the horn *shout with joy before the King, the Lord.

8Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, *the lands and those who dwell therein.

9Let the rivers clap their hands, *and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, when he comes to judge the earth.

10In righteousness shall he judge the world *and the peoples with equity.

    John 13:20-35

20 Very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.” 21 After saying this Jesus was troubled in spirit, and declared, “Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he was speaking. 23 One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining next to him; 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So while reclining next to Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After he received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “Do quickly what you are going to do.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the common purse, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival”; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the piece of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. 31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

    Proverbs 8:22-30

22 The Lord created me at the beginning of his work,    the first of his acts of long ago. 23 Ages ago I was set up,    at the first, before the beginning of the earth. 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth,    when there were no springs abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains had been shaped,    before the hills, I was brought forth— 26 when he had not yet made earth and fields,    or the world’s first bits of soil. 27 When he established the heavens, I was there,    when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 when he made firm the skies above,    when he established the fountains of the deep, 29 when he assigned to the sea its limit,    so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always,
